Game Recap: Lions hosts Cobras (6/1/19)

COLUMBUS, GA - The Carolina Cobras traveled to Columbus to face the Lions tonight in the Jungle and fought hard for a 52-43 victory on the road.

The Cobras offense had the ball 8 times tonight and scored all 8 times.

The Cobras won the initial coin toss and as usual elected to received, and as usual scored on the opening drive. This one went 5 plays for 47 yards and finished with Charles McCullum to LaVon Pearson for a 19 yard score and a 7-0 lead to open the game. The Cobras D held the Lions to a 4 and out and got the ball back, this time it was 6 plays and 45 yards, finishing with a 6 yard pass to Jordan Jolly and a 14-0 lead in the game. This time the Lions answered back, going 6 plays and 32 yards finishing with a 2 yard pass from Luke Collins to Bones Bagaunte, with the PAT it was 14-7 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

In the Second Quarter the Cobras drove right back down the field, this time for 30 yards and finished with WR Kyrin Priester running it in from 3 yards out and the Cobras had a 21-7 lead. The Lions answered with a 31 yard drive, finishing with a 1 yard run by their new FB Kamryn Pettway and it was 21-14 Cobras. It took another long drive, this time 44 yards by the Cobras and a 12 yard TD catch, his second of the night, for Pearson and the score was 28-14, and that was our score heading into halftime.

The second half started with Columbus with the ball and they drove 34 yards, and this time it was Pettway with his 2nd TD run of the night, from 2 yards out, to pull the Lions within 28-21. The Cobras were not to be denied, driving 30 yards down the field and a great catch by Jordan Jolly from 12 yards out for his second TD of the night, and it was 35-21 Cobras. The shootout was on. The Lions marched down field, this time Bagaunte was good for his 2nd TD of the night from 11 yards out, the PAT was missed and it was 35-27. Back came the Cobras and it was Pearson with his 3rd TD of the night, an 8 yard catch to make the score 42-27 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

On the opening drive of the fourth quarter the Lions again drove down the field, and finished with Bagaunte for his 3 rd TD catch of the night from 1 yard out, and the 2 point conversion was good with Paris Mack taking it in on the jet sweep to make the score 42-35 Cobras. The Cobras drove the field, but for the first and only time tonight were kept out of the end zone, but that did not stop new Kicker Brandon Rutherford from nailing a 23 yard FG to push the Cobras lead to 45-35. The Lions answered with yet another long drive, that seemed to have at least 8 plays inside the 5 yard line, before they scored this time Deandre Brown with a 1 yard TD catch. Bagaunte caught the 2 point conversion and it was 45-43 Cobras with 18 seconds left. The Lions went for the onside kick, but it went over the wall at the 5 yard line. The Lions still had two time outs left, so the Cobras had to move the ball forward, it took 3 plays and it was Charles McCullum running it in from 1 yard out to put the game away and your final score from Columbus was your Carolina Cobras(5-2) 52, the Columbus Lions (2-4) 43.
