GREENSBORO – After winning the 2018 NAL Championship, Head Coach Billy Back is looking to rebuild his defense. After brining back DB Michael Green, next on his agenda was signing DL Walter Thomas, “We have signed the Captain [Charles McCullum], the General [Michael Green] and now the Beast [Walter Thomas] back for the 2019 season, the frame of our structure is almost all in place and Big Walt is the base of that.”

Thomas (6’3”, 340) was an asset for the Cobras during postseason play, starting both games and having 1 sack and 1.5 tackles, to Coach Back it’s not all stats, it’s what he brings to this team, “Point blank there is no one else I’ve had the pleasure to coach or watch play at any position that needs to be the focus of a teams offensive game plan. If you don’t try to slide to double this monster you won’t block him very well and when he figures out your plan it’s all bad for an opposing Offensive line. The only way that happens is if he allows you to, but good luck with that as others have found out. He’s been an amazing talent I’ve had the pleasure of having on my teams since 2013 and what a big ass security blanket he is.”

Prior to the Cobras, Big Walt played for the Wichita Falls Nighthawks from 2016- 2017, where he earned Second Team All-IFL in 2017 appearing in all 16 games. In 2016, Thomas racked up 27 tackles and five sacks. After taking a break from playing football, from 2014-2015, Thomas played for the Nashville Venom under Head Coach Billy Back and helped them win their first IFL title in 2014. Prior to that, he signed with the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL in 2010. Thomas went undrafted in 2007 but signed with the New Orlean Saints as a free agent for Rookie Minicamp.

Before going pro, Thomas spent is freshman season at Oklahoma State before attending Northwest Mississippi Community College. At NW Mississippi, Thomas only played recorded five tackles for loss and four sacks.

Walter Thomas grew up in Galveston, TX, where he was a stand out at Ball High School. He was heavily recruited by a number of Big 12 Conference schools before selecting Oklahoma State.
